I remember very clearly one kid when I was around 4 or 5, a very friendly boy who had had his head shaved and treated for life, had a glass eye and stammered when he was asked a question. He might also have been a bit deaf. His family lived in a 'temporary' Nissen/Quonset hut of corrugated iron. I was the teacher's unacknowledged (and unwitting) son, and we 'bonded'. He took me fishing in the local stream. I hate to think what happened him.
