It is convenient for those with viable incomes
to confuse beggars and hustlers. On a serious radio programme I heard a sociologist declare that 'beggars' now had portable terminals to take his credit card.
The bigmouth sociologist was referring to those people who work on commission to stop likely others on the street, to get them to sign up for a monthly contribution to some well-known charity.
'Charity' begins 'at home', with the homeless (usually accompanied by a protective dog) on the street. But it is rather less smuggy than signing up for Caritas.
