It's mildly amusing

that, in the old days,
people were instructed to say cheese
in front of a camera
rather than leer.

No : leer as in "to leer" = "look or gaze in a lascivious or unpleasant way", zu schielen auf Deutsch.

I was merely trying to poke fun at the vacuity of forced photo smiles. Clearly my attempt was a bit too far fetched. :)
