This is Colorado -

Once while walking along the edges of an old mining camp higher up, I'd been drawn to the sight of bare, branch-less pines posted at regular intervals along the steep escarpment. After a steep climb I found myself surrounded by their barren forms. The vision of their dominance on the hill, uniformly bald and straight as arrows, was peculiar enough. Not until I was among them did they begin to fall at random, yet without wind or weather that might disturb them.

It was dusk, and not a soul around in view or to hear. I had a premonition, more a sensation, really, but walked on, expecting a trunk to fall on me at any moment, so strong was this feeling. I never hurried though, because I felt no fear. Just an odd, out of place acceptance - out of place for the times, at least.
