In this instance the religion seems to be quite rational, and the courts that tried to ban fasting unto death irrational. As humans we need a self discipline that works that will give us as much control over our bodies as we can use throughout our lives. It is materialistic but in a profoundly modest way. Western materialism has taken a different course. I have worked in a nursing home where some patients refused to eat and in so doing effectively took their own lives, which the owners of the home always regreted because they then had to replace the elderly patients with others if the owners wanted to occasionally parade around the home in their fur coats playing Lady Bountiful.
