Here's a good example. Cane toads were introduced into Australia originally as deterrents to other creatures. And now:

What the article doesn't tell you is that once a bag full of the toads has been collected, a hose is slipped in which fills it with carbon monoxide. Auschwitz for the cane toad.
See also: Ligotti's discussion of the "for the good of man" requirement that's attached to the Nobel Prize for literature. That's one giant deterrent to good writing as well as good citizenship.
I did have a good time, although that was mainly due to the weather and sense of freedom after coming from dreary, awful England. On the other hand, Australia is a very middle-class, money-focused, consumer society and there is, apparently, major environmental damage being done there due to the 'need for resources', so don't worry: I'm under no delusions about it!

Karl, while you had a good time in Australia not long back, I have felt Australia is a horrible place for quite some time.
The story of rabbits in Australia is even more poignant.
Also, there are MANY stories of governing bodies announcing rewards for capturing rats -- and people breeding rats for more bounty.
