It could be said that we destroy a 'natural' perception also when we learn to read. Then we have to read hundreds of good books to get it back (more or less). And then we die.
Language is not our only tool of consciousness. I believe that when we hear music our hearing the music lifts our consciousness which makes hearing a tool, and music a way of being lifted, whereas words dull us.
A very perceptive remark, Bearz. It is also interesting that the music we like most is the music we MAKE - with non-verbal consciousness. Though as you and I know, dogs sometimes try to sing along...

Is all writing and reading the expression of unhappiness? Larkin: 'Happiness writes in white'.
Not of mere unhappiness, but of disjunctiveness, anomie, pseudo-detachment and all those things "that make us human" (!)
