In fact, the Gendarmerie (Gens d'Armes
unlike British and Irish police
who don't have guns about them,
except in Northern Ireland)
is a unruly-when-necessary
part of the armed forces.
The CRS or riot police is even more
unaccountable and terrifying.
This is why France is so often on the edge
of turning into a Police State.
French 'Law and Order' (with some exceptions)
had a lovely World War Two.
But it's not very far from Calais to Dover.

Before I was hauled into court, fined a thousand euros and given a suspended sentence for 'insulting a policeman' (a very unpleasant individual who didn't like red cars, foreigners or beards) one of the first things I was asked was if I wanted to overturn the state. I laughed. Silly me!
I had remarked to my passenger that this guy was a pretty nasty piece of work, which was wrongly over heard as Nazi.
The 'urban myth' about the police stopping red cars in France is (or was) true.
