The Man in the Iron Mask

was once second only to The Count of Monte Cristo
is my list of favourite books.  So I am a fan of
Lord Binface, who could actually win - and deserve -
a seat in the British Parliament.

Today I also learned (from the BBC)
that many communities in India
choose their leaders by lot,
including the entire population in the raffle.
If chosen, one can always refuse,
as happened in ancient Athens.
Apparently, it works very well,
not least because it avoids the anti-democratic
excrescence of political parties, and is
very inexpensive.
