Mystery.

Modern standard English and French
owe their pronunciations to lisps,
speech defects and mannerisms of royalty.
English was also affected by a Dutch king
and courtiers who didn't pronounce
final Rs.  Modern American* English is
highly gendered, with women in recent years
adopting a loud nasal whine which renders
their speech both unintelligible
and hard on the ears.

I am unsure about how 'modern' you are thinking 'modern American English' should be. But it is worth noting that Donald Trump is now picking up on his former life as a wrestling promoter-in such over-rehearsed 'entertainments' it is expected that where women appear the viewer can't tell where the artifice started, and when women will talk they will all talk of their self entitlement in loud grating voices to project through the television screen. His new press room staff are all female and all talk boastfully of Trump in braying voices like wrestling promoters, where the sensitive don't know what they want to hear least, the words or the tone of voice in which they are spoken. Both are painful to hearers of them-including me.
