When I see what is going on in Britain, the utter hopelessness in dealing with immigrants, I would suggest to take away Great and just to call the snotty island Britain.
Generally, the 'Great' is used only on official documents The United Kingdom of Great Britain, and Northern Ireland and by pompous politicians. Until the 1980s almost everyone referred to 'Britain' (or, by the English, 'England'). Now it is generally referred to as The U.K, or (worse) UK.
After Brexit, the international identification plate changed from GB to UK, which is an invitation to desperadoes like me to carry a Magic Marker around, to add an F on SUVs of arrogant, monoglot tourists.
Note: Almost nobody refers to Mexico as The United States of Mexico, nor to the arrogantly-named USA as the United States of America to the North of the United States of Mexico. Indeed, most of the world, even outside the USA, allow it to usurp and absorb the identity of the whole continent.
