"Poetry makes nothing happen,"

wrote Auden.
This may be its greatest virtue.
The beauty of great poetry
is that it achieves nothing
with a passionate
or delicate insistence –

though publication,
like all human achievement,
is destructive.

At its best, poetry is satisfyingly
passive resistance.
