I once asked a chemist how hard it would be to synthesise sodium pentobarbital, showing merely the structural formula to him. He said it was nothing but "kindergarden chemistry" as it lacked a stereocenter.
Sadly, I am not even up to performing kindergarden chemistry.

Since writing this, I have discovered a street-drug known as Tranq which is often added to Fentanyl, Cocaine or Heroin. It is the veterinarian drug Xylazine, legally available just about anywhere.
"Documented toxic effects including blurred vision, disorientation, drowsiness, staggering, coma, brachycardia,respiratory depression, hypotension, miosis, and hyperglycemia. Fatality case reports have documented concentration ranges from a trace amount up to 16,000 ng(nanogram,one billionth of a gram)/mL (microlitre or millionth of a litre)in both as contributory factor and sole use."
Just half a gram would kill you outright. A vet might have enough (usually in liquid form) to poison a very large cocktail or garden party if it were dropped into drinks.
A 100 gram (minimum) bag of the crystalline form of the stuff can be ordered @ $2 a gram from China via AliBaba. The customs declaration will state that it is Hydroxy-propyl methyl cellulose, a thickening and emulsifying agent (resembling cornflour) in many pre-prepared foods.
Trade names: Rompun, Sedazine, AnaSed, Chanazine.

And either I have a false memory or I was ill-informed, as pentobarbital does indeed have a stereocentre.

Feeling quite good after a Bad Patch. Bought three lovely blooming little cacti this morning at the Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val spring plant fair. I now have a nice little collection of cacti and succulents, which do well on my warm balcony/terrace.
