Even if everyone on the planet
were to live just above the level of malnutrition
and without running water or electricity
(or aeroplanes, cars, nuclear fission,
phones or restaurants or live-in maids),
the formerly abundant, teeming biosphere
might stagger on depletedly
for only another four or five decades.
