My neighbour

has a little piece of garden
occupied by two cherry trees
and a radiant carpet of buttercups

which he devastates
in his humble way
just as armies
and industries
devastate whole landscapes.

And just as people have no interest in fish
except to grill them,
my neighbour has no interest in native plants
except to kill them.

One of the curses that we lay upon the environment is the garden devoid of native plants, and the 'neat and tidy' lawn kept shorn by machines. In environmental terms, gardens are semi-deserts.

Our lawn manicurists have let this swath of grasses go to seed.
I applaud their sloth and self-interest.
