people (mainly men) have played
intelligent games (backgammon,
chess and checkers, senet, go, oware/mancala...)
More recently, bridge, mah jongg and scrabble
became popular. But if further evidence
were needed of the infantilisation of the species,
it is supplied by the sudden popularity
of Wordle, a pointless puzzle-game
of chance much sillier than crosswords.

In fact, Wordle is not a game at all, since 'game' implies more than one living and present player.
Unless masturbation could be called a game, since Wordle seems to be some sort of 'civilised' substitute for masturbation...
It all depends on the first word. Today I entered THING. There was no way I was going to end up with JELLY. Unless, perhaps, I had been born/been programmed to be a crossword-person.
