The English

have been in Ireland
since the end of the 12th century
and still they cannot spell
an Irish name or word pronounced to them,
nor pronounce one written down.

Go figure!

Many English people write their in their own language quite poorly, far worse than they would find it easy to explain to themselves or anyone else. So expecting them to be multi-lingual and understand the language of their nearest neighbour country well is asking quite a lot. Particularly when the history the two countries share is also poorly understood by the larger country of the two.
