What merit

is there in possessing the faculty of reason
if it is not used, or, worse, craftily misused ?

....I often feel that the faculty of reason is a horrible thing ー a terror. It is the monster in the horror show of life.

It's not 'pure' reason that is so horrible, but craftiness, which I guess is reason in the service of motive.

Pure? Isn’t the world just a mixture of impurities? As Guston (sorta) pointed out??

Isn’t reason a product of evolution? A tool for survival. Rather than purely for reasonableness…. So it seems particularly impure….
