Two Quatrains after Abu al'-Ma'arri

We came here unconsulted. When we go,
quite unconsulted from this life we're sent.
    Meantime we progeny of  discontent,
spend half our lives commuting to and fro.

..........

My hope is that the vile, unruly pack
of humans can somehow be withdrawn -
as there to a camel might come a dawn
with no large burden on his aching back.

Yes ... if only the worst of possible worlds didn't have the worst of possibly residents. Unfortunately, the vile pack would be the last to withdraw from burdening their fellow man without consult.

How sad a place this world, if cripples from Abu to I had to consider ourselves "lucky", merely for not having to live in a time and place where we would live our days begging for coin or meal.
