Shakespeare

did not think his plays would last,
but hoped he would be remembered
for his sonnets.

He over-estimated his future
audience and readership.
Comparatively few folks read
his fourteen-liners, but the corpus
of his speechy, creaky dramas
will be played and overplayed,
commented on and studied
across this ravaged, savaged planet
until the mercifully-conquering
Aliens from Aldebaran ban it.
