Woody Guthrie

was born a hundred years ago today.
Being a communist *,
he was a champion of the work-ethic.
The last fifteen years of his life
were spent dying
with the progressive paralysis
of Huntingdon's Chorea,
first in a psychiatric institution
then a geriatric ward.
Being a communist *,
he seems not to have thought
euthanasia a good idea.

* but never admitted into the Communist Party of America.
