One inventive Christian punishment for uttering words of another language than English was the sticking of pins in children's tongues. Making them eat soap (to wash out the unclean language) was not uncommon. They were assured that their parents would spend eternity in Hell.
'His Holiness' the Pope has so far refused to apologise on behalf od the Catholic church which carried out these minor punishments, and actively encouraged the children to die - from disease due to overcrowding, cold, malnourishment and misery.
To this day Native Americans are despised and condemned for seeking solace in alcohol and other destructive drugs.
