Cultures of Achievement

and property
perish horribly.
Cultures of non-achievement
and generosity
last for dozens if not hundreds
of millennia.

(I am currently reading Peter Matthiessen's
1965 book "At Play in The Fields of the Lord"
a battered, tattered copy of which I found
in the Little Local Library in the Street.)

Have you finished the book? I saw the movie--yes, yes, so American. So, that's the only context I have for it. The movie itself was very thought-provoking and extremely daring given the US's Puritanical obsessions and Hollywood's pandering to public tastes. I am still somewhat amazed it was ever made.

Yes,I finished the book. I class it highly - on a par with Dostoyevsky.
I am now reading his last book "In Paradise" which is a disturbing take on Auschwitz-tourism, the awfulness of Poles (which I have experienced) and the whole Shoah-culture which is imprisoning Jews all over the world while non-Jews in the Middle East are going through a Shoah of their own because of Britain, the US, Israel and now, of coure, Iran and Russia. Quite an unholy alliance!

That's quite an assessment. Thanks for the "In Paradise" assessment, also, as I have wanted to do the Auschwitz tourism thing. I'll look into both books.
