Or before a dog found him....

I found Her in an animal shelter.
It was mutual and intelligent (on Her part) love at first sight.

I don't get the "tragedy" here.

Did you serve in the army? Raúl

Irony, irony, Marc. It is a major part of Jewish culture, as well as of the European 'intelligentsia'.

There has never been compulsory military service in Ireland, Raúl.
The English didn't dare introduce it. Since its independence, Ireland has been protected by Britain, and now of course by NATO, but is the only EU country which is not a part of NATO.

It is the only European country with some kind of dignity, and where a true hero can still be found...

Ireland is a country of fairies and poets ,Raúl

..and of corrupt politicans, sexually and physically abusive priests & teachers, overrated writers, underrated writers, vulgarised music and a lot of whining about its sad past, which really was not nearly as bad as that of Poland, and hardly worse than that of poor Paraguay !

True. I meant in a romantic sense. You have friends in the IRA? Raúl

I don't like testosteronal thugs, so I have no friends in the IRA.

Señor Auban,
You are an Irishman living in France. In Paraguay many prominent Paraguayans were of Irish descent such as historian Juan E. O´Leary, and former president Juan Bautista Gill. An Irishman Carlos Morphi founded Caacupé,the spiritual city of Paraguay, and last but not least Elizabeth Alicia Lynch from Cork, Marshall Francisco Solano Lopez´s Queen of Paraguay.
I suppose that when the IRA and the REAL IRA, and the Ulster Volunteer Forces lay down completely their arms, the crime rate is going to increase. Otherwise what are the women and men who have been living violently lives are going to do? TAKE CARE

I have read about Elizabeth Alicia Lynch...

The famous Bernardo O'Higgins of Chile deserves a mention - though of course he was second-generation.

Most crime in Northern Ireland (of which there is very little compared with the US for example) is carried out by the various paramilitaries and their little drug cartels and other rackets.

Irony? Yes, yes, I get it now. The question is: how come I didn't get it before?

I am disappointed in you people.
There is a photo of young Auban and a beautiful dog. And you turn the discussion to IRA.
What was the dog's name, favorite food, how did he died ?
Fuck the IRA and talk about us, we are much more interesting.

Dína - notoriously beautiful German Shepard

It's crazy that this is my most-cmmented-on post, and I absolutely agree with Dína. What has the IRA got to do with ELEKTRA, the rescued German Shepherd in the picture. She was an amazingly intelligent dog, and could turn round handles on doors with her teeth to let herself out a room. Once she did that and followed me (riding a scooter) all the way to the university, and came in to a philosophy seminar.
Unfortunately, after she had puppies by a black Labrador, she started chasing sheep and teaching her puppies to do so.
The police ordered that she be electrocuted - back in the place from which I rescued her.
That was probably more terrible for me than for her. She just had a couple of minutes of discomfort - then bang! - but I ended up spending a night in a psychiatric hospital, before I realised that I was better out than in a place very like a prison.
I took her corpse home and burned her on a big pyre. I still have one of her calcined vertebræ.
She was the light of my life, and could even sit on the running-board of my scooter...until we both fell off.

Every one of my dogs died tragically: Shep, the next and male German Shepherd, not so intelligent but very funny, died of renal disease.
Oscar the last one was murdered by my homophobic and dog-hating farmer-landlord.
He was my Great Teacher - and he had a great sense of humour. He was friendly with postmen, coal-carriers, even children. The only person he avoided was my redneck landlord. (American rednecks tend to be of Scots-Irish - i.e. Ulster - descent.)

All my dogs were friendly and could be shared with my family and friends.

Now that I live in two countries commuting between them on extremely cheap flights, I cannot have a dog, which has saved me from further grief. That does not stop me from ogling other people's, and often my heart is warmed by seeing independent and happy village dogs on their daily 'rounds'.

Señor Auban,
Although I meant well I apologize for asking you about the Irish Republican Army. I admit that reading Gayle Rivers´ book about the execution of IRA men by British commandos, watching the news about the IRA attacks on British soil, specially the one against Prime Minister John Major in 1991, the films In the Name of the Father and Michael Collins played by Liam Neeson influenced me. You are a man of peace and tranquility. Raúl
