Today might be a day to remember -

like the day in 1936 when Hitler's army occupied the Rhineland,
or the day in 1938 when Hitler's army and SS occupied the German-speaking area of Czechoslovakia.
What will happen in Eastern Ukraine ?
What use is NATO except to infuriate the Russians
and keep corrupt Western arms industries booming at the expense of the poor ?
I am proud to be a citizen of one of only two nations which refuse to join NATO.
(Thus spake an admirer of the younger Cato.)

Anthony, what do you think Cato would have made of antinatalism and quiet hedonism?

The usefulness or lack of same of NATO is worth debating. I would not link that to how angry V. Putin appears to get, if he is a rational human being, and he is rational on behalf of Russia, he is not rational and logical on behalf The Ukraine or any other country.

It's hard to know what Cato the younger would have thought of antinatalism. Rome was basically an agricultural society, and breeding labour was very important. I don't know how far his Stoicism would have accommodated our kind of quiet hedonism.

I'm *much* more afraid of what our war-mongering U.S. congress might do than Mr. P. I thought Empire went out with pink coloured maps, but I guess I was wrong.

Putin is now ferrying many young men with buzz-cuts to Moldova, whence they cross into the break-away, Russophile Transdniestria, and thence into Southwestern Ukraine. They are neither Mormons nor Jehovah's Witnesses - but (to use Franco's memorable term) Putin's "Fifth Column".

The pattern of the annexation of Austria, and of the Czechoslovak Sudetenland "to help oppressed German-speakers" is being repeated ominously.

Of course, the USA invaded the tiny British island of Grenada and overthrew its mildly-socialist government because it was "a threat to the security of the Caribbean". Nobody complained - except Damned Commies, of course.
