I got it wrong.

When I learned in school
about the components of Earth's atmosphere

I worried that the loss of oxygen
due to the rise of  breathing
human populations would be calamitous,

though nuclear war was more likely.

Even though I had once
experienced London smog,
I didn't think that catastrophe
would come from all the other gases
that we (without the slightest care)
would expel into the air.
