This was one of my favourite hymns.
The contralto Heather Harper sang in
the choir of the Presbyterian church
that I attended as little as possible.
In the British Isles, Rose of Sharon.
was the name ridiculously given to
cool-thriving Hypericum calycinum'.
Elsewhere it is Hibiscus syriacus
which is actually native to the Levant,
but is not a bulb, as suggested by the Hebrew
חֲבַצֶּלֶת הַשָּׁרוֹן
Most likely, it was a crocus or small tulip.
