The seeds of apples brought
from the Eden of the Western Himalaya
and sown in fertile places all the way to Europe
were from varieties chosen over centuries
by sweetness-loving bears.
The Russian for this creature -
медведь, medvyed,
means melissophile, honey-lover -
but it might just as well have been apple-eater.
