Mindless,

almost literally mindless
are the millions whose behaviour,
attitudes and thoughts are governed
by Tweets, Facebook, other media,
family, religion, peers and employers
- amongst others.

In previous generations similar people would have been ruled by television news bulletins which they would not dissect for bias and misreporting, before that-say during WW2-there was radio news and newspapers each with a gov't agenda stamped all over them, and before that, depending on how far back you want to go, pamphlets and pamphleteering under the watchful eye of the state sensor, the Lord Chamberlain's Office in the UK. I suspect that people were no more frivolous in past times than they are now, but I'd agree the opportunities for frivolities have increased.
