so humanitarian, so civilised,
you Syrian refugees
who have walked for days
and often by night
through Turkey
to an EU Border
where your passports are torn up,
your mobile phones confiscated,
your clothes slashed for booty...
Now crawl away, back into Turkey.

From far away I read about these poor, tired, hungry masses, yearning to be free (from filth, want, hunger, violence), a paraphrase of New York harbor's Statue of Liberty (a gift from France in the late nineteenth century), a major New York landmark and popular tourist attraction. Is there nowhere on the planet for these people? We in the US have taken in more than 30 million from the Spanish speaking Americas, legally and illegally, and we are better for it, but also millions of brilliant brain-drain high-techies. We have space, we have land and the diaspora is all over the US, not just California. Yet, these migrations have become an enormous political hot potato. The Goths, Visigoths, Huns, Germans poured into the Roman Empire for four hundred years. Then, the Mongols and Turks invaded and stayed in Eastern Europe. A lot happened during these invasions, granted. When we will value what we can share instead of hoarding what is just ours? That strategy is destroying the environment, not to mention history.
