An important sociological question.

Why is it that we will eat the same breakfast every morning
but require variation in the main meal of the day
(except when the main or only meal is breakfast) ?

You speak for Westerners like yourself, Anthony! =)

I wouldn't dream of speaking for the inhabitants of impoverished Third World countries who have hydrogen bombs and extra-terrestrial satellites & rockets. But do tell all 34 of my readers what your dietary habits are, Srikant.

Oh, I didn't intend any offence! Why are you so condescending?

Anyway, South Indians eat a variety of dishes for breakfast. They're typically accompanied by sambar and/or chutney and/or gotsu. Dishes we eat include idly, pongal, vada, dosa, upma, aval. We sometimes also eat the bland bread with butter and jam or the sugar-rich "cereals" from the West.
