On Democracy and Abattoirs

As a miraculously-happy pig
I vote that Socrates be eaten.

Why is this titled "on democracy and abattoirs"?

Because, Srikant, democracy was invented in Athens, and Athenian Socrates, in JS Mill's epigram, is contrasted with a pig. Pigs don't have any kind of vote, and are slaughtered in abattoirs. Socrates was condemned to death. Athenian slaves did not have the vote, but were not eaten...
