On Dante and Translation

"..cut off from hope
we live on in desire,"
declares the pre-Christian unbaptised
in the Inferno, Canto IV (33-42).

But desire [disio] implies hope.
A better word would be
longing - which implies
a certain hopelessness.

Per tai difetti, non per altro rio,
semo perduti,e sol di tanto offesi
che sanza speme vivemo in disio.
