some examples of the Lord's copious instructions:

DEUTERONOMY XIV

3 You shall not eat any abhorrent thing.

4-5 These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the mountain-sheep.
6-8 Any animal that divides the hoof and has the hoof cloven in two, and chews the cud, among the animals, you may eat. Yet of those that chew the cud or have the hoof cloven you shall not eat these: the camel, the hare, and the rock-badger, because they chew the cud but do not divide the hoof; they are unclean for you. And the pig, because it divides the hoof but does not chew the cud, is unclean for you. You shall not eat their meat, and you shall not touch their carcasses.

9-10 Of all that live in water you may eat these: whatever has fins and scales you may eat. 1And whatever does not have fins and scales you shall not eat; it is unclean for you.

11-20 You may eat any clean birds. But these are the ones that you shall not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the osprey, the buzzard, the kite of any kind; every raven of any kind; the ostrich, the nighthawk, the seagull, the hawk of any kind; the little owl and the great owl, the water-hen and the desert-owl, the carrion vulture and the cormorant, the stork, the heron of any kind; the hoopoe and the bat. And all winged insects are unclean for you; they shall not be eaten. You may eat any clean winged creature.

21 You shall not eat anything that dies of itself; you may give it to aliens residing in your towns for them to eat, or you may sell it to a foreigner. For you are a people holy to the Lord your God.

You shall not boil a kid in its mother’s milk.

DEUTERONOMY XXII

11 You shall not wear clothes made of wool and linen woven together.

DEUTERONOMY XXIV

10-13 When you make your neighbour a loan of any kind, you shall not go into the house to take the pledge. You shall wait outside, while the person to whom you are making the loan brings the pledge out to you. If the person is poor, you shall not sleep in the garment given you as the pledge. You shall give the pledge back by sunset, so that your neighbour may sleep in the cloak and bless you; and it will be to your credit before the Lord your God.

LEVITICUS XIX

23-25 When you come into the land and plant all kinds of trees for food, then you shall regard their fruit as forbidden; for three years it shall be forbidden to you; it must not be eaten.
In the fourth year all their fruit shall be set apart for rejoicing in the Lord.
But in the fifth year you may eat of their fruit, that their yield may be increased for you: I am the Lord your God.

26 You shall not eat anything with its blood. You shall not practise augury or witchcraft.

27 You shall not round off the hair on your temples or mar the edges of your beard.

32 You shall rise before the aged, and defer to the old; and you shall fear your God: I am the Lord.

LEVITICUS XXII

23 An ox or a lamb that has a limb too long or too short you may present for a freewill-offering; but it will not be accepted for a vow.

24 Any animal that has its testicles bruised or crushed or torn or cut, you shall not offer to the Lord; such you shall not do within your land,

25 nor shall you accept any such animals from a foreigner to offer as food to your God; since they are mutilated, with a blemish in them, they shall not be accepted in your behalf.

LEVITICUS XXIV

22 You shall have one law for the alien and for the citizen: for I am the Lord your God.
