Usually these signs are in prison towns where the prison is not visible from the road/highway where the sign is placed, as if anyone needs to be reminded, because prison towns are famous--as in notorious. I've seen several of these signs. Weekend night-time fare for my favorite cable news channel is three hour documentary cinema-verité Saturday and Sunday nights on incarcerated life and its multiple and wide-ranging characters (both male and female prisons featured) with their multiple and wide-ranging stories and dysfunctions. We have the largest prison population in the world. I catch snippets when I turn on television to access a movie. Fifteen seconds tells a lot about a cultural mindset which provides an audience for such programming and my own horrified curiosity--the kind of high school fascination teenage boys had in my day with raunchy, grainy pornographic pictures.
