'Police State'

was a much-used term in the 1950s and '60s,
describing totalitarian régimes in Eastern Europe,
and more distant parts of the world, especially
Haiti, Honduras and Paraguay.
Lately, we heard talk of a mysterious Deep State.
But now we're back to Police State, not describing
Poland, Guatemala, Myanmar or even Chile
– but the USA.
