A well-worn adage of Confucius goes :

'Better to light a candle
than rail against the dark.' 

But even a lantern, Diogenes declared,
will reveal only shadows and deceit.

Better to adapt to the darkness
than be by light ensnared,
and ultimately suffer cognitive defeat.
