This is why I am an admirer (from a safe distance!) of China.
THE THING ABOUT CHINA is that (apart from the Formosan Thorn in its side) China has no interest in building an empire. Formosa has always been a part of China. It already has it. It has no interest in exporting its system of government or its moral code or world-view.... It has no interest in destroying self-vaunting democracies apart from Taiwan and Hong-Kong. It (or rather its leaders, and I guess its subjects, too) just wants to be the most important nation (as it once was). In this it is quite unlike the Western Powers (and Russia) who wanted to subjugate - still want to impose their social systems, their systems of government on - the whole world - not through beneficence but (through invasion, genocide, famine) simply to make themselves ever grander and richer and rulers of the world. The murderous United States still has this infantasy.
