On the resumption of Taliban rule in Afghanistan.

"Americans,
while occasionally willing to be serfs,
have always been obstinate about being peasantry."

- F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, 1925.

  1. I have been re-reading Fitzgerald's book, which I did not much care for 40 years ago. I still think it ridiculously over-rated - especially compared with the book whose title, Le Grand Meaulnes, is echoes by Fitzgerald's.

But at least it is shorter than Proust's work of tedious genius.
