My feeling was more vague than Bukowski's - I think it could be called apathy. I really couldn't understand the idea ofMy Future beyond the opportunity to potter about and read a lot more literature. My Future didn't even involve 'sex', let alone a job.
Aye. Same here - one of the advantages (?) of growing up without a father. If there is one word that horrifies me almost as much as procreation, it's "career".
Status is a kind of power, an explicit or implicit acknowledgment of a kind of superiority. Blessed are those who don't give a damn what others think,a very small human minority, but if there is a collocation of mammals, human or otherwise, there is a ranking, i.e., status.
Status is not power, but a place in a hierarchy. It is an obsession of those who feel that they lack or have no power in their current hierarchy, even if they have the vote and are not actually starving or homeless. We know that the starving homeless can also feel that their status is higher than that of the dying, the dead, or dogs.
Some people who have no interest in status - such as Shakespeare (!) or Mother Theresa or Santoka the penniless, wandering Japanese monk, acquire it because others with some form of status or other require it - possibly to bolster their own status.
I feel that I am a person without any status, but others may consider me of more value than cat-shit. But I cannot possibly comment.
