in rich magnificence with no sense of the ridiculous and without the least humility.
There is something Hegelian here about the swirling synthesizing gyre of history where patriarchal institutional drives proclaim glorious spiritual triumphs, or at least think they are doing so, while all the rest of the world understands the blast of trumpets as the gasping for breath in a death rattle. Too bad two Popes didn't realize also that John XXIII will always stand on his own.
